Summary of the industry analysis The market research industry is very unique and provides important information to the different industries selling products and services to consumers. Description of the company Wise Research is a market research company. It’s business is field research in shopping malls which categorizes it as a field research company. Field research companies do data collection on research projects. Wise Research has been operating in this business for 25 years and has several subsidiaries. These subsidiaries are all mall research offices. The head office and two other offices are located in Dallas, TX, one is located in Tulsa, OK and one is located in Hammonsville, MI. The office in Hammonsville has exited for 10 years. The company is involved in fieldwork, although they do not generate questionnaires or analyze the collected data. The core competence of Wise Research is to collect data for other marketing research firms, and these firms provide the information to their clients. One can conclude from the descriptions of the company that it does not have a mission statement, a philosophy or a particular strategy concerning organizational culture and ethical behavior. The lack of ethical behavior of Wise Research leads to a severe damage of their reputation in the long run and to any marketing efforts. Financial condition One can assume that the financial situation is not very good since we learn from the case that benefits promised to employees are paid with a delay. Another evidence for a poor financial situation is that Sarah is told that she could make $ 25,000 a year with a 40-hour week, which is not true. Management philosophy and managerial climate The case does not say anything about the management philosophy, but is does talk about the behavior of the management, which drastically influences the organizational culture and climate. Sarah’s job According to Bill and Karen Wise, Sarah’s job has the following work conditions: the pay is $11 a hour, and she can earn $ 25,000 a year with a time per week of 40 hours. The benefits are health insurance premiums at the same level as the Dallas employees. The Missouri employees normally do not get health insurance benefits. One week of vacation was offered after one year of employment. Performance reviews are held after three and nine months. Raises are only given after performance reviews. 7. Summary of the condition of Wise Research The condition of Wise Research, especially in a long-term consideration is very poor. D. Sarah Norton – the new employee 1. Sarah’s personality Sarah Norton is 32 years old and she was brought up in Missouri by a morally strong family. The values in her education were religion coupled with high moral standards. She is respected and liked by family, friends, and colleagues. She never tries to convince other people to share her views in moral standards, ethics or religion. She has one younger sister and a boyfriend in Hammonsville and she is very close with them. 2. Location Sarah lives in the city of Hammonsville, Missouri. Hammonsville has about 150,000 inhabitants. Hammonsville is the town where she wants to work since her sister and her boyfriend Jeff live there. The city of Hammonsville does not have many opportunities to work as a market researcher, because a small town like this does not contain many industries that need market research. 3. Evidence of problems Sarah Norton applies for a job at Wise Research after reading their job advertisement in the newspaper. After two interviews she gets hired and is sent directly to Dallas for on the job training. During the first week of training, Sarah understands that the company’s treatment of employees and customers is very unethical. She realizes that she is very unhappy with the situation and she needs to make the decision if she wants to stay with the company or not. These are the different problems I found in the situation analysis: Ethical Issues: Professionalism à ¼ The company operates in a very unprofessional way. The job advertisement is placed in the Hammonsville News Monitor, on Sunday, July 9th, 1995. It doesn’t say the name of the company, nor does it give any specific job requirements. It only gives a reference to details about an entry-level management position. Instead of an address a PO-Box is named. à ¼ The following interview is not very professional either. Sarah meets Mr. and Mrs. Wise in a hotel room in Hammonsville, without knowing that she was going to meet Mrs. Wise too. The interview is very informal and the clothing of the Mr. and Mrs. Wise is not appropriate for a business interview. The office facilities are not shown to Sarah. à ¼ The second interview is as informal as the first one. à ¼ The training process also shows a high level of unprofessionalism. Sarah receives an Airport Pick up from the son of Mr. and Mrs. Wise. He invites her for lunch and behaves in a very informal manner and tries to impress Sarah with different statements. He also tries to discover contents of about the phone call Sarah made earlier to the Hammonsville office to find out more about the job. Also, he has only a very little understanding of the research process and is not able to answer her questions. à ¼ There are no computers in the company. à ¼ The knowledge of the interviewers and other staff of the company about the data collection process is on a very low level. Ethical issues: Organizational culture à ¼ Before the interview Sarah called the company to find out more about what they are doing and the local manager reacts very irritated when he hears that she is invited for a job interview. It tells us that the manger does not know what is going on in the company and that the communication is bad. Later in the interview she learns form Bill and Karen Wise that this local mangers was laid off and that she is hired to replace him. As a matter of fact, he is still at the company and he does not know yet, that he will be laid off. à ¼ Another indicator of unethical organizational culture in the company shows the fact that Sarah is asked not to tell anybody why she is at the company when she starts her training. The other employees are told she is an auditor. Because of this, she has to be at the company first in the morning so that no one can see her clock in. à ¼ More evidence of dishonesty is shown by the information that actual working time in the company is 37,5 hours, not 40 as said in the interview. This decreases Sarah’s annual salary and she does not earn the promised amount. The dishonesty to employees and different treatments of employees show the low level of organizational culture. For example the company pays Cindy less than Sarah even though they have more or less the same job. Management took advantage of Cindy’s situation when she was hired and her raise of salary was delayed. à ¼ Another incident gives information about the organizational culture: one of the interviewers is supposed to be laid off because this interviewer talked to somebody else in the company about her salary. The management initiates this lay off. The employee is in a very bad financial and social situation that does not impress the management at all. After begging to keep the job, the interviewer is allowed to stay. Ethical issues: The Code of Ethics The Code of Ethics is shown as Appendix II. There are several actions by Wise Research, which interfere with The Code of Ethics by the MRA. Reports about how many interviews are completed per hour are manipulated so that these reports show the exact number required. With this method Wise Research manipulates the figures regarding how many potential interviewees were screened. Wise Research uses family members and relatives of the interviewers to answer survey questions if they run out of time. They use these relatives several times with different names, so that the clients cannot find out. This affects the validity of the data.

Fahrenheit 9 11 Movie Review Controversy, conspiracy, and lies are the themes of the film as Michael Moore deals with the sensitive topic of American politics in Fahrenheit 9/11. This documentary is a rhetorical film, with the goal to persuade the viewers to agree with Michael Moores impression on the American foreign policy. In spite of ones political siding, the film will probably have the audience leaving with a different perspective on American politics. Fahrenheit 9/11 is an influential film that clearly gets Moores message across to the viewer; but what exactly is it that makes the film effective? There are several aspects of the film that should be considered in terms of its effectiveness. One is that the movie uses the rhetorical form, which means the entire focus of the film is to convince the audience of something that are supported by strong arguments, facts, and evidence. This film uses three types of arguments: from source, subject centered and viewer-centered arguments. Each of these elements expla in what the films message is, and makes it more interesting and credible, and each of the elements will be explained on how Moore tries to connect the 9/11 attacks to the Bush administration. As previously stated, Fahrenheit 9/11 attempts to convince the viewers of Moores claim that the Bush administration was linked to the 9/11 attacks. Moore opens up the movie by giving evidence of this connection through interviews, news footage, and documents. Apparently, there is a big act of deception and negligence done by the former president that led to the terrorist attacks. With this proposition, Moore tells his intriguing and convincing story of the September 11 attacks. The movie the moves on to investigate the outcomes and effects of the 9/11 attacks from the Patriot Act being passed, to higher and complex airport security, to the questionable war in Iraq. The movie ends with Moore tying these claims together by appealing to the viewers emotion with scenes of the poor, soldiers, and their families. This leaves the audience with a clear idea of what the purpose of Fahrenheit 9/11 was. To connect the bush administration to the tragic terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. The clear goal of the film is to persuade its audience that the Bush administrations wrongdoings led to the attacks, so we can consider this documentary to be a rhetorical film. If a viewer is a Republican, Moore wants to convince them of his treacherous actions and negligence that led to the attacks. Furthermore he wants to show that the main goal of the party is to have money, power, and control. If the viewer is a democrat, it seems as though Moore wants to spark their minds, and realize how important it is to have him removed from his presidency. This is obviously Moores opinion, which gives the documentary a rhetorical aspect. Although he is conveying mainly his point of view, the film does make good use of evidence to help support his point, even if the evidence seems bias or unreasonable. Another aspect of rhetorical documentaries used in the film is appealing to the audiences emotions. This is probably the films strong point and most touching element since it makes the viewer think differently about what they see, most notably in the news, and takes away their naivety. Even is a viewer completely disagrees with Moores political views, they will be touched by the other emotional elements used, and forced to think about their idea of American politics. These emotional elements become a tool that Moore uses to express and explain his arguments more intensely. One of the arguments made is viewer-centered, which means the film is using emotional images to persuade the viewers on a particular topic. Shown are numerous videos and pictures that are usually non existent in American media. Moore makes the war in Iraq a personal matter when he shows the viewers the dramatizing tragedies that occur everyday. Sure the U.S soldiers that have died are remembered though the media but we rarely hear about those injured. Moore allows these injured soldiers to give their point of view on the war, as well as their injuries, which range from amputated limbs to nerve damage. More importantly, Moore gives us a point of view that we are rarely given in the media. He shows us the hardships of the Iraqi people themselves. We are shown Iraqis being interviewed by Moore about how the men have to carry their dead loved ones in their arms, and we are shown graphic images of women whose faces and heads suffered severe injuries due to misuse of napalm. Images also sh owed dead Iraqis being thrown into a back of a truck when an Arabic male says, translated from Arabic, What was this childs crime? Was he going to fight against the soldiers?. This scene strikingly resembled the atrocities of the holocaust. Interviews by Moore also involved an American mother of a soldier who was killed in Iraq. We see her weeping over the death of her son as well as we see her get into an argument with another American citizen who is pro-war. The point of all these cases being revealed by Moore, is to show the audience what was really going on, and to instill sympathy for all the people who have suffered from the war. A war which was in all reality invented by the Bush administration. This fairy tale of a war goes on into a different argument for rhetorical documentaries, subject-centered arguments, which are arguments based on the films main subject. The main argument to be established in Fahrenheit 9/11 is that the Iraq war was instigated by the Bush administration to gain power, money, control, and an alibi. Moore presents these propositions in a variety of ways. Moore states that, rather than to protect the American people from weapons of mass destruction, or the Iraqis from Saddam Hussein, the war was started because of the money that was generated for the Bush administration. Moore narrates Bushs thoughts when he was told about the 9/11 attacks, and asked which one of them screwed me. Moore is setting up the possible scenarios of who exactly was responsible for the 9/11 attacks with this statement. Moore claims that when bush learned that it was Bin Laden who screwed him, he decided to blame Saddam Hussein by falsely accusing him of having weapons of mass de struction and connections with Al-Qaeda. By blaming Saddam Hussein, Bin Laden was no longer under the microscope, and Bush was safe form being exposed of his financial and friendly ties to the Bin Laden Family. Saddam was the ideal scapegoat, because war in Iraq allowed the Bush administration to make millions of dollars for their companies like Halliburton, and Unocal, in the midst of fighting. Moore proves this point by showing footage of numerous corporations having meetings to discuss the millions of dollars that could be made from war in Iraq. Scenes even showed Bush Sr. and Jr. courting with Saudis who had invested money in a variety of their companies. To be truly convincing though, the film showed scenes of Bush and a Saudi with the song Shiny Happy People by REM in the background to empathize their relationship. Saudi Arabia, not to mention happen to be where Bin Laden and his very wealthy family are from. The film also shows a percentage of U.S wealth owned by Saudis which is at 7 percent. If the Saudis withdrew their investments, it is very liking the economy could collapse. Despite the bias in this claim, it shows that Moore is very knowledgeable and well informed on the subject. The final argument made by Moore is from source, which means to present the film in such a way that the viewer can rely on it as a reliable source of information.Thus, the last argument is from source, which is presenting the film as a reliable source of information. Moore may be most adept in this argument because, in some cases, his opinions are confirmed by the very person he is saying them against. For instance, when Moore states that there were no weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, he reinforces this statement by showing Bush and members of his party saying, pre- 9/11, that Saddam has no weapons of mass destruction. Moore also used news clips from channels like CNN and FOX networks that are considered trustworthy and credible. He also supports his opinion by interviewing people in prominent positions like congressmen. Moore is also able to present himself as a believable and educated person, even if this may not be true. As the narrator, he can talk in first person making the narration more personal. Moores voice and tone changes in relation to the topic at hand. If he is talking about soldiers, their families, or the Iraqi people his voice is filled with compassion. When talking about Bush and his friends his tone of voice is sometimes indifferent as if he were merely presenting facts, but at other times, depending on the subject, his tone would become sarcastic. Moore also proves himself to be researched and visionary when he talks about Bushs National Guard record. Moore he requested a copy of this document, which proves another connection with the Bin Ladens, in 2000 and then one in 2004, when controversy about it surfaced. In the 2004 version a name was blacked out, which was the evidence in this link between Bush and Bin Laden. This name was not marked out in the 2000 one, however. Moore is able to show that he was suspicious of Bush long before other people were. This documentary in its rhetorical form uses different arguments to support its message, through sources, subject-centered, and viewer-centered perspectives. The film can be considered a piece of propaganda but regardless of if you agree with the opinions it expresses or believe the message trying to be conveyed, it is hard to ignore because it makes such strong accusations. Fahrenheit 9/11 is a commentary on current American life and regardless of its truth, it does send a powerful and controversial message that raises questions and does deserve discussion. Despite peoples views not being swayed after watching the film, it will surely cause all of the viewers to discuss it allowing others to receive the message as well. Harry Potter, J.K. Rowling | Analysis In J.K. Rowlings Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone, the protagonist, Harry, is todays modern hero. It is noticeably apparent that Harry is a hero, using the guideline, the Heros Journey developed by Joseph Campbell in his novel, The Hero With a Thousand Faces. In Campbells book, he breaks down multiple heros tales, from mythological and modern times (from Odysseus to Luke Skywalker), into certain steps that each hero takes throughout their journey. I will be following Harrys tale, in relation to Odysseus tale as told by Edith Hamilton in her text, Mythology, to show Harry as a hero, just as Campbell proved Odysseus. The story of Harry Potter is the common story of good vs. evil, with the good and evil in the story being blatantly obvious. Voldemort, Harrys adversary, intends to kill Harry because, as their prophecy, another element of mythology, foretold, neither can live while the other survives. However, when good meets evil (Harry meets Voldemort) in the novel, good prevails bo th times; which is a very clichà © concept. The need to find acceptance and a place where he belongs is a driving force for Harry. He has come to the realization that he is different, and that theres a possibility that there are people like him somewhere else in the world. However, he doesnt know just yet that he really doesnt belong in the muggle world; let alone that there are even other worlds beyond his own. The world of magic, a world that is filled with mythological archetypes, creatures, and the oddest of people will finally be the place that Harry feels at home (because at once, it was his home). This essay will asses the claim that the Harry Potter novels, Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone in particular, have archetypes that are common to Greek Mythology, exclusively Odysseus tale, along with the use of other literary devices to prove that modern literature surely has not become obsolete over the years. It will do so firstly by following the use of the Heros Journey in both novels, and secondly by making a comparat ive analysis, based on these observations, in order to be able to give an answer to the research question. III. Harry Potter as a common mythological hero, in relation to Odysseus The fictional character, Harry Potter, from J. K. Rowlings novel, Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone, follows one of the common archetypes found in Mythology, The Heros Journey. This archetype was discovered and sorted out by Joseph Campbell in his novel, The Hero With A Thousand Faces. The Journey consists of three major parts and seventeen sub-sections within the three major ones. The three major ones are, The Departure, The Initiation, and The Return.  [1]   In Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone, Harrys journey starts with the major point, The Departure with his call to adventure; when he gets his letter of acceptance to Hogwarts School of Wizardry. He then refuses this call when he tells Hagrid, I think you must have made a mistake. I dont think I can be a wizard.  [2]  He receives supernatural aid from Hagrid, who is really just an extension of Dumbledore, the predetermined caretaker of Harry Potter when Harrys parents died. The death of Harrys parents actually becomes a symbol and extended metaphor. His mothers love becomes a form of protection for him, because she sacrificed herself for Harry, out of love; the same love that continues to protect Harry throughout the novel. Harry crosses the first threshold when he enters Diagon Alley for the first time.  [3]  Diagon Alley is considered the root of the wizardry world, this is where every wizard keeps their money, buys the necessities for wizarding, and where everything that is associated with wizards is found. The Belly of the Whale stage is often seen as the initiation into the new world.  [4]  Harrys initiation is when he first enters Hogwarts and is sorted into Gryffindor, one of the four houses at Hogwarts.  [5]  In Harrys overall Journey, Harry learns the entire prophecy. This new knowledge transforms Harrys identity so that he now sees himself as a marked man; he feels separate and apart from the rest of Hogwarts (or the rest of the world, for that matter), and most importantly, it makes him fully committed to the goal of defeating Voldemort. This is the most important step because it shows that the character is willing to undergo a metamorphosis, to die for the greater cause, so its expected that Harrys character will evolve in a significant, positive way because of this step. The next major point, Initiation, starts with Harrys road of trials. However, Harrys trials arent in order with the steps of the heros journey, theyre closer to the end of the novel. Harrys trials are the enchantments that are guarding the Philosophers Stone. These consist of, Fluffy, the three-headed dog  [6]  (another mythological archetype that will be discussed later in this essay), the Devils Snare, deathly vines that constrict like boa constrictors around its captors  [7]  , which is symbolic for the hardships that Harry has been and will be going through in the future. Others include enchanted keys intended to kill anything that attempts to disrupt their purpose of guarding a door, and finally a life-size Wizards Chess board in which Harry and his two friends were to become actual players in.  [8]   There are three transformative events that are the possible culmination of the heros journey. These are Meeting with the Goddess, Atonement with the Father and Apotheosis. For Harry, who is raised in the absence of love, love is his life goal. The Goddess guides Harry and provides him the means for success in his trials. In a sense, all women comprise the Goddess they inherently represent Life and Death simultaneously. Some may clearly take on the shadow side of the Goddess as represented in the Temptress model, while others may have both elements of light and shadow. Several women portrayed in this novel have specific attributes of the Goddess. These characterizations may focus on the romantic aspect, but there is also the motherly and sisterly perspective of this motif that needs to be considered. While all women are goddesses; the hero has but one Goddess to be found. She is his reflection, his complement, apparent opposite yet unified with his soul. As mother, Lily Potter sacrificed her life to Voldemort for love of Harry.  [9]  He owes his existence to Lily not only for birth, but also for her ongoing protection from Voldemort. Harry was cursed with a scar the day his parents died and his life was spared, from the protection of his mothers love. The scar burns every time Voldemort is nearby because of the connection the scar has to its creator. The scar could also be burning as a warning from his mother because her love is Harrys protection. As a sister, in spirit, Hermione poses as the goddess in each adventure or trial. Hermione is the knowledgeable one out of Harry and his two friends, Hermione and Ron. Hermione guides Harry with her knowledge; for example, she was the only of the three that knew how to ward off the constricting vines of Devils Snare.  [10]   Harry Potter is a boy with many fathers the biological father of course is James Potter; the father of memory is Vernon Dursley; the protector is Albus Dumbledore; and the demon who created Harrys destiny is Lord Voldemort. There many are other men cast in the father archetype within the series, as well. James is perceived as being exceptional at everything, much like his son, Harry. He gave his life fighting Voldemort and in protecting his wife and son under attack. James is Harrys ideal the perfect and unattainable father. Albus Dumbledore is Harrys protector, the keeper of the prophecy, the wielder of old magic based in love, the enchanter of the Dursley home, the keeper of the Order, and the master of Harrys education. Dumbledore is the archetype of the Wise Old Man who seems to know what Harry is thinking even before Harry can formulate his thoughts. Dumbledore appears to have command of both space and time. He also demonstrates superior insight and a higher state of conscious ness. Dumbledore has a transcendent authority that is obeyed by both good and dark wizards, the latter complying despite individual will and verbal commentary. Dumbledore unveils Harrys powers gradually, emphasizing repeatedly that his greatest power is love. To apotheosize is to deify. When someone dies a physical death, or dies to the self to live in spirit, he or she moves beyond the pairs of opposites to a state of divine knowledge, love, compassion and bliss. This is a god-like state; the person is in heaven and beyond all strife. A more mundane way of looking at this step is that it is a period of rest, peace and fulfillment before the hero begins the return. Harry has been known by the magical world to be the savior of the world since he was an infant. That belief diminished greatly after he was viewed to be a very real adolescent instead of the mere stuff of legends. Harry, however, knows nothing of the enlightened state in fact, Harry believes that actions of others were the basis for his survival rather than any power that he possessed. There are several possible events where Harry Potter can achieve recognition of his true ability. The first may be identification as Dumbledores peer in wizardry where Harry becomes the greates t of all wizards. There is a substantial power that Harry must still discover for this to take place perhaps in how to wield that greatest power found in the Department of Mysteries love. Another possibility is an encounter with Voldemort to overcome, or at least balance, his dark nature. Voldemort has spent lifetimes contriving means to cheat death, yet never comprehending the value or meaning of life. Conversely, Dumbledore is the reigning Bodhisattva who has conquered death (in terms of being the greatest wizard), but chooses to stay in the world until it is saved. This burden appears to be taking its toll on him even as his protà ©gà © Harry nears maturity. The ultimate boon is the achievement of the goal of the quest. It is what the person went on the journey to get. Not knowing how to dance salsa is not something special but that day, at that moment, in that birthday, it meant a lot to me because my father was a professional salsa dancer and I am supposed to have that gene in my veins. The first few weeks were the hardest in the dance studio. I was scared, I felt that I had two left feet and for my bad luck always touched me dance with the most awkward of the boys. His name was Marcos. A very friendly guy, handsome and gentlemanly, but dancing was not his best skill. The first steps that we learned were basic but the most painful, I was not used to dance that type of music because it is a very fast dance and every song seemed endless. â€Å"The Salsa is very spontaneous, involves a lot of movement of the hips and feet† always said our instructor, he was a very funny man but what we most love about him was his patience and commitment to us. He showed us that we must first overcome the fear and shame that involves dancing in from of a group of people so we can show all the confidence that we have. And that’s exactly what I did, with time and practice I became the best in my class. Salsa dancing became my obsession I could not stop thinking about it, especially knowing, that the last session was a competition dance. The prize was a medal and that medal was my goal. I practiced day and night, in every spare moment, until the day of competition. I confess I was very nervous but I still succeed in overcoming all my fears and given the best of me on that dance floor. And you know what? I won, I won the medal and became the best in my class, I am very proud of myself because I showed that it is never late to learn something new and that everything in life involves patience, effort, practice and above all dedication .
