The Horror Genre in I am Legend by Richard Matheson

In I Am Legend, Richard Matheson both satisfies and subverts horror genre expectations in order to convey the idea that people are reluctant to change. He fulfills expectations with the usage of the zombie trope and through the characters’ desire to maintain a sense of normalcy. He subverts the expectations with abnormal details and by revealing who the true creature is. The zombies symbolize a change in the world and the characters’ curiosity symbolizes their need for answers in a world with no explanations. The usage of subtle differences offer something unexpected to the reader by paralleling the unexpected situation that Robert Neville finds himself in. Matheson uses these techniques in order to convey the message that even though our nature makes us reluctant to adjust to change, we mist free ourselves to adapt or else we become the abnormal ones of society. To help demonstrate this, I will employ close reading and Noel Carroll’s The Nature of Horror. The essay will focus on the actors involved in the conflict and highlight their ethnic background as reason for escalation. Further, the essay will discuss the social, political and economic reasons of the conflict. In addition, the essay will highlight the historical context of the problem followed by the role of international players in the conflict. South Sudan achieved independence from Sudan in 2011, making it the newest country in the world and garnered much recognition. However, the country has yet to achieve complete independence in the truest sense as the majority of population is still illiterate and devoid of the basic human needs like food, shelter and water (Bbc.com, 2018). After the country achieved its independence, the two key players, Salva Kiir and Reik Machar, have been on the edge against each other. Although both Kiir and Machar represented the same party, that is, the Sudan Peoples Liberation Movement (SPLM) belonged to different ethnic groups. While Kiir hailed from the largest ethnic group Dinka, Machar belongs to the second largest ethnic group, Nuer. Both the President and his deputy had fought side-by-side for the liberation of South Sudan but both had conflict on interests. During the fight for liberation, the Murle tribe representative David Yau Yau accused the Sudanese government of prejudice and start ed a rebellion. Furthermore, the widespread atrocities by the Dinka against the Shilluk people after the notorious 2010 disarmament campaign also escalated ethnic tensions. Another incident in 2011 where the Lou Nuer and Murle tribe clashed over cattle rearing issue, added fuel to the already disturbed nation (Voanews.com, 2018). The Nuer White army even released a statement calming that the security of Nuers cattle could be guaranteed only if the entire Murle population is wiped out. These incidences prior to the creation of South Sudan indicate the long-standing trouble between different ethnic tribes and its people like Kiir and Machar. Machar had dreamt of becoming the President of South Sudan and considered Kiir to be incapable. Signs of resistance within the ruling SPLM party surfaced more clearly in the July of 2013 when Kiir sacked Machar and his associates, who were mostly Nuers, from the cabinet. The conflict could have been averted by both the parties but they instead gav e it an ethnic color just to fulfill their political goals. As mentioned in the last part of the previous section, the two major players in the conflict utilized their ethnic identities to accomplish their political objectives. The conflict initially began as a political turmoil after the Vice President Dr Reik Machar opposed the move of sacking him and his associates by President Salva Kiir. However, social and economic unrest have also played a major role in the creation of the conflict. South Sudan is predominantly an agricultural country and cattle are the dominant part of livelihood. Apart from that, the country is also rich in oil, which makes it an economically vital nation within the African continent and internationally as well. Moreover, the country has River Nile flowing through its regional centers and is a major trade and transportation route. These factors make South Sudan an economically vital country that had the potential to develop at a fast pace. It was fortuned to have an already established oil industry that placed the co untry well enough to bear the cost of huge investments needed for education, health and physical infrastructure. However, these benefits were not strategically utilized and resulted in the creation of the conflict. Disagreements with Khartoum during the time of independence regarding the oil flow led to the worsening of the economic condition with investors leaving the country. Corruption by the government officials also added to the worsening condition of the country on the economic side and allowing the rebels to oppose the government and start a conflict. As pointed out by De Waal (2014), the political marketplace of South Sudan was so expensive that the military-political support system consumed the countrys abundant resources and revenue. The authors further explain that the shutdown of oil production in January 2012 made the system completely bankrupt. On the social front, as already discussed, the powerful Dinka and Nuer tribe people dominated major part of the country and often clashed with each other. Tension between the two tribes was evident even before the creation of South Sudan when members from both ethnic groups battled to dominate cattle raiding. Although the creation of the newest nation was appreciated and hailed by many within the country and across the globe, the flaming but underlying ethnic tension was completely ignored. Justin and van Dik (2017) while focusing on the issues of land reform as an aspect of the civil war, state that the long history of land disputes between ethnic groups and legal frameworks failing to address these issues further escalated the tension. In his official speech to the people of the newly born South Sudan, President Kiir stated that the people must demonstrate unity and strength despite diverse ethnic groups. In an attempt to demonstrate unity within the government, Kiir appointed Machar as his second-in-command despite Machar being a Nuer and being responsible for the 1991 massacre of Dinka people in Bor. Within two years, Machar became vocal against the President and even challenged him for 2015 presidency. One particular incident in the December 2013 in the countrys capital, Juba, where forces loyal to Machar clashed with Kiirs forces sparked the flame that engulfed the entire nation. The actual reason for the attacks although still questionable, both Machar and Kiir blamed each other. While Kiir designated it as an attemot for coup by Machar, Machar reverted with the accusation that Kiir failed to tackle corruption and violence. The political squabble soon turned into a large scale ethnic conflict leading to the deaths and displacement of millions of South Sudanese. Amidst the entire episode of the conflict, its rise, the final spark and the ongoing tensions, the role of international players is disputed. The United States has been the most active amongst international players aiding the cause of South Sudan. First, the U.S. was vocal against the atrocities carried out against the Christian community in southern Sudan, which was even evident from George W. Bushs foreign policy concerning Sudan. After South Sudans independence, the U.S. was most welcoming of the new country designating it as a victory of the oppressed. It is but interesting to note that since the U.S had been long associated with South Sudan cause, it did know about the inner ethnic conflict. Further, it also knew that the independence was achieved keeping aside these ethnic issues but still it decided to ignore it. Had the U.S. made the decision to advice first the SPLM for resolving the inner conflicts first and then move ahead building a new nation, things could have been diff erent. Apart from the U.S., the role of the international organization like the United Nations also comes under scrutiny. The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) was formed to stop further escalation of the civil war. Having around 7,500 peace-keeping troops in South Sudan, the organization has been unable to prevent the brutal conflict. In fact, the UN troops denied stopping the clashes stating it did not fall under their responsibility. The UN has been criticized heavily for its failure to protect the civilians and stop the conflicts for the past five years and as a result, it even sacked the military chief responsible for leading the mission in 2016 (Reuters.com, 2018). The intervention of the Ugandan government into the conflict has also been questioned by many. Claiming that the UN Secretary General had requested Uganda to intervene and that it wanted to evacuate its own citizens, the Ugandan troops soon started fighting for forces loyal to Kiir. As Apuuli (2014) not es, The participation of Ugandan troops in the fighting on the side of the Kiir government renders the intervention illegal. The Ugandan intervention is not only illegal, but it demonstrates the economic self-interest of the government. In terms of ethics also, the intervention was far from being ethical. Kiir and Machar were both fighting for one common cause back in the 2000s to 2011 but the lust for power changed the entire scenario. The country later was further divided into the Dinkas and the Nuers and the actual motive for attaining freedom was lost. The conclusion thus could be made that the South Sudan conflict could and should have been stopped from escalating. International players like the U.S., Uganda and the UN could have kept aside their vested interests and thought of helping the innocent South Sudanese people. Lottery By Shirley Jackson While the setting of Shirley Jackson's, The Lottery, takes place on a clear, sunny, June day, it does not take long for the skies to turn gray as she introduces the readers to the black box. The black box is the central symbol of the short story. It suggest both death and necessity of change due to a combination of the passage of time and population expansion. The reference to the black box as a symbol of death can be seen in many instance's throughout the story. For example, when the box is first introduced, "the villagers kept their distance, leaving a space between themselves and the stool ( which the box was placed on)." People are afraid and the distance they kept was not due to their fear of the box, but of what the box stood for . . . death. This point is further illustrated through the manner in which the box was stored. "The rest of the year, the box was put away, sometimes one place, sometimes another; it had spent one year in Mr. Grave's barn and another year underfoot in the post office, and sometimes it was set on a shelf in the Martin grocery and left there." Death is not something that people deal with everyday. Human beings deal with death very similar to the way that the towns people stored the black box. People place their experiences with death in different rooms and shelves of their hearts. The black box also symbolizes the need for a new tradition and the reluctance of the townspeople to accept change. The black box is a symbol of the lottery itself. The physical appearance of the box suggest that it was not only the black box that needed to be replaced but the tradition of the lottery. "The black box grew shabbier each year; by now it was no longer completely black but splintered badly along one side to show the original wood color, and in some places faded or stained." As the physical appearance of the black box deteriorated so did the appropriateness of the tradition. Takash 2 Mr. Adams revealed in his conversation with Old Man Warner that many of the towns surrounding them had already ceased the lottery tradition and many more were in the process of discussing it, thus further proving that the lottery has lost its significance. In reply to Mr. Adams remarks, Old Man Warner says, "There's always been a lottery ." and "Nothing but trouble in that, pack of young fools." Old Man Warner's response to Mr. Adams exemplifies the unwillingness of the townspeople to change the tradition and the townspeople's failure to accept the need for change. The dark clouds that came into view when the box was first introduced become a full fledged storm at the conclusion of the story. The black box became the ultimate symbol of death as it is the very vechile that delivers the unfortunate winner's prize which is death by stoning. The storm of immoral and unethical actions is further propelled by the momentum that came from the townspeople's extreme degree of self interest. The terrible tradition was carried out once again. Instead of considering the effect that the tradition had on their fellow man they were grateful that the black box had blessed them with their own lives. As far as they were concerned the sky was blue and the sun was still shining.

Whether it be human emotions or a human leg that ends up getting torn apart, the victim in question is also to blame. When it comes to war, nobody (at least nobody who lives in America) is forced to enlist in any division of the army. Viewed as a bigot, Internet troll, and homophobe by his detractors- he’d likened feminism to cancer, told gays to â€Å"get back in the closet† and led a campaign of harassment against black actress Leslie Jones- the British transplant to the U.S. made headlines in early 2017 after his college tour sparked violence. When the University of California, Berkeley, canceled a Yiannopoulos speech because riots broke out on the campus in response, President Donald Trump took to Twitter to suggest that the university should lose federal funding for not supporting free speech. That the president would take the time to allude to him on social media signaled that Yiannopoulos, best known in right-wing circles, had successfully entered the mainstream. But less than a month later, the provocateur would lose his Simon Schuster book deal, his invitation to speak at CPAC, and his job at Breitbart. How did this dramatic turn of events come about? A review of Yiannopoulos’ life, career, and controversies reveal some of the factors that led to his rapid rise and shocking fall.    Early Years and Education Born Milo Hanrahan on Oct. 18, 1984, to a Greek-Irish father and an English mother, Yiannopoulos grew up in Kent in Southern England. Years later, he would change his surname to Yiannopoulos in honor of his Greek grandmother. Although he is now considered a darling of the alt-right movement, which has been linked to anti-Semitism, Yiannopoulos says that he has matrilineal Jewish ancestry. He grew up as a practicing Catholic, however, with his mother and stepfather. The openly-gay Yiannopoulos has indicated that he consented to have a sexual relationship with a Catholic priest, despite being underage at the time. This claim would factor into his downfall at the height of his career. By his teens, Yiannopoulos, who didn’t get along well with this mother’s husband, lived with his grandmother. Although he attended both the University of Manchester and Wolfson College, Cambridge, he never earned a degree, but his lack of education did not prevent him from having a journalism career in the United Kingdom. Journalism Career Yiannopoulos’ journalism career took off after he began working for the Daily Telegraph, where he developed an interest in tech journalism after reporting on women in computing in 2009. He also appeared in a number of broadcast news outlets and programs, including Sky News, â€Å"BBC Breakfast,† â€Å"Newsnight† and â€Å"10 O’Clock Live,† discussing topics such as feminism, men’s rights, the gay community and the Pope. Through this project  the Telegraph Tech Start-Up 100, he ranked influential European tech startups in 2011. That same year, he launched the Kernel, a tech journalism site. Political  Leanings Yiannopoulos has said he’s not interested in politics, but as his career progressed, he increasingly expressed views that aligned him with the alt-right, of which he’s described himself as a â€Å"fellow traveler.† He is said to have skewed coverage of 2014’s Gamergate controversy, which led to attacks, including death and rape threats, against prominent women gamers who’d criticized sexism in video game culture. Yiannopoulos described the women as â€Å"sociopathic,† despite the fact that they were the victims of relentless online attacks that forced them out of their homes when their addresses and other personal information were revealed on the Web through  a practice known as â€Å"doxxing.† In 2015, he organized a meeting of Gamergate supporters which received a bomb threat, as did a Society of Professional Journalists event featuring Yiannopoulos discussing Gamergate. Despite the outrage he sparked, Yiannopoulos’ notoriety earned him a position with Breitbart News Network, which named him  tech editor in 2015. The far-right news organization has been accused of reporting misinformation and fueling racism, anti-Semitism, and misogyny through its content. Former Breitbart News chair Stephen Bannon serves as an assistant and chief strategist for Donald Trump, whose election to the presidency has coincided with a rise of racial harassment  and white supremacist activity, including the killing of an Indian engineer and the desecration of Jewish cemeteries. Jewish magazine the Tablet has taken issue with Yiannopoulos for aligning himself with organizations that promote a racist, anti-Semitic or misogynistic agenda while maintaining that he doesn’t personally harbor such views. Tablet writer James Kirchick pointed out in 2016 that Yiannopoulos only mentions his matrilineal Jewish heritage when the anti-Semitism of his supporters comes to light. He said that Yiannopoulos’ Jewish heritage didn’t prevent him from wearing an Iron Cross medallion- a symbol of the Nazi regime - as a young man. Yiannopoulos has also defended himself against racism charges by saying that he prefers black men as lovers. â€Å"Like the insistence that he can’t be an anti-Semite because his mother has Jewish ancestors, Yiannopoulos’ assertion that his carnal desires inoculate him from the charge of bigotry is a deflection ploy,† Kirchick asserted. â€Å"Ironically, it’s also a form of the identity politics he claims to despise. While the ‘social justice warriors’ (SJWs) Yiannopoulos mocks say they cannot be racist or anti-Semitic on account of their identities, Yiannopoulos flimsily asserts the same about himself. The alt right should be absolved of similar imputations, Yiannopoulos says, because its spokesman is a gay half-Jew with jungle fever.† A Professional Troll The year 2016 saw Yiannopoulos’ star rise exponentially. That’s in large part because he kicked off his â€Å"Dangerous Ft† college tour in late 2015, which led to protests nationwide at universities such as Rutgers, DePaul, the University of Minnesota, the University of Pittsburgh and the University of California, Los Angeles. During this timeframe, Yiannopoulos began to earn a reputation for being a professional troll. Twitter, for example, suspended his account in December 2015 after he indicated on his profile that he was BuzzFeed’s social justice editor (which he was not). Twitter suspended his account once again after he made anti-Muslim remarks following the June 2016 mass shooting at Pulse, a gay nightclub in Orlando, Fla. Yiannopoulos was permanently banned from the social media site in July for inciting a campaign of racial harassment against black actress Leslie Jones, a star of the all-female â€Å"Ghostbusters† remake. He compared Jones to a man, and his fans likened her to apes, a comparison white supremacists have long used to dehumanize blacks. Yiannopoulos denied culpability for the racist abuse Jones received but was still banned from Twitter, as hed also crafted fake tweets photoshopped to look as if theyd been sent from her account. He later said that he was thankful for the ban for giving him more notoriety. The idea that Yiannopoulos is simply a troll using politics to become famous spread when BuzzFeed quoted a  Breitbart intern saying â€Å"Milo Yiannopoulos is not one person.† Reportedly, 44 interns are responsible for crafting his articles and social media posts. Yiannopoulos seemed to admit as much at first, saying that was the norm for someone with a career like his. But he later backtracked, implying that he didn’t rely on ghostwriters. Whatever the case, critics such as Kirchick contend that Yiannopoulos is a â€Å"rank opportunist.†   He shouts â€Å"outrageous things solely designed to upset liberals. He has nothing original or interesting to share,† Kirchick asserts. Because he makes his points in a â€Å"crude† fashion, however, Yiannopoulos manages to court controversy and stay in the news. In December 2016, Yiannopoulos made headlines after news spread that publishing giant Simon Schuster had just given him a book deal with a $250,000 advance. The announcement not only prompted the Chicago Review of Books to stop reviewing Simon Schuster books but also black feminist writer Roxane Gay to walk away from her book deal with the publisher. Pride Before the Fall At the onset of 2017, arguably more Americans than ever had become familiar with Milo Yiannopoulos. On Jan. 20, the same day as Trump’s inauguration, Yiannopoulos spoke at the University of Washington. Violent demonstrations took place outside, with a Yiannopoulos supporter shooting a protester at the event. The gunshot resulted in life-threatening injuries, but the victim survived.    On Feb. 1, Yiannopoulos was scheduled to speak at UC Berkeley. An estimated 1,500 protesters gathered outside. Some started fires, engaged in vandalism and pepper sprayed passersby, leading the campus police to cancel his appearance. This provoked Donald Trump to tweet about defunding the University of California for not upholding free speech. The outcry over Yiannopoulos’ college tour didn’t deter comedian Bill Maher from inviting the journalist on his â€Å"Real Time† show on Feb. 17, however. And the very next day, Matt Schlapp, chairman of the American Conservative Union, announced that Yiannopoulos had been invited to speak to the Conservative Political Action Committee (CPAC). The invitation sparked some conservatives to speak out in opposition, but CPAC stood firm. Then, a conservative blog called the Reagan Battalion tweeted a video from 2015  of Yiannopoulos saying he consented to have a sexual relationship with a priest when he was a teen. It went on to tweet out other videos of Yiannopoulos defending underage males having sex with adults. In the clip that sparked the most controversy, Yiannopoulos said: â€Å"Some of those relationships between younger boys and older men, the sort of coming-of-age relationships, the relationships in which those older men help those young boys to discover who they are, and give them security and safety and provide them with love and a reliable and sort of a rock where they can’t speak to their parents.† Yiannopoulos also made a snarky remark about the priest who allegedly abused him. â€Å"I’m grateful for Father Michael,† he said. â€Å"I wouldn’t give nearly such good [oral sex] if it wasn’t for him.† He also made a point to say that sex with young teens did not constitute pedophilia, as sex with children did. Due to these remarks, Yiannopoulos was widely accused of advocating for adults to have sex with underage teens. The backlash was swift. CPAC disinvited him from its conference. Simon Schuster canceled his book deal, and Yiannopoulos resigned from Breitbart after staffers said they would quit if he wasn’t fired. Yiannopoulos expressed regret for his choice of words, but it wasn’t enough to convince his former allies to stand behind him. â€Å"I’ve repeatedly expressed disgust at pedophilia in my feature and opinion writing,† he said in a Facebook statement on Feb. 20. â€Å"My professional record is very clear. But I do understand that these videos, even though some of them are edited deceptively, paint a different picture. I’m partly to blame. My own experiences as a victim led me to believe I could say anything I wanted to on this subject, no matter how outrageous. But I understand that my usual blend of British sarcasm, provocation and gallows humor might have come across as flippancy, a lack of care for other victims or, worse, ‘advocacy.’ I deeply regret that. People deal with things from their past in different ways.† Now that Yiannopoulos’ career at Breitbart is in the past, members of the groups he offended- women, Jews, blacks, gays- question why only  his remarks about the age of consent led his supporters to disavow him. Why didn’t it concern CPAC, Simon Schuster et al. that Yiannopoulos had made odious remarks about women’s rights, gay rights or civil rights generally? They argue the idea that only his tacit endorsement of pedophilia made Yiannopoulos unfit for the large platform he was given sets a low bar for civil discourse and  overlooks the impact of bigotry  on the marginalized.
